All the works carried out by Mor Sports were completed on time and on budget to the complete satisfaction of Nick Blackwood, Tennis Director of the Blackwood Tennis Academy. The courts were completed in readiness for the tournament that started on Saturday, November 1st 2014 with the finals being held on Sunday, November 9th 2014.

During October 2014 Mor Sports Group carried out the essential preparation and surfacing works to the existing 5 tennis courts at South Seas Resort Captiva.

The project was to re-surface the tennis courts to championship standard in readiness for the high profile ladies’ tennis tournament. Mor Sports worked closely with the organizers throughout the design process all the way through to final surface installation.

Our skilled installation crews worked round the clock and carried out the full resurfacing of existing courts to provide the Tournament Director with 4 tournament courts and a stadium court, on time and on budget.

Liasing with Nick Blackwood, the Tournament Director we produced a resurfacing specification that ensured all the courts were prepared to a standard that meets all ITF specification and the tournament criteria. Mor Sports also ensured that the courts were tailored to the required speed of play. We also ensured that we provided an excellent life span for the playing surface.

Our resurfacing specification ensured that all the courts were brought back to ‘CHAMPIONSHIP STANDARD’ by using simple but effective preparation techniques.

As we do for all our Clients, Mor Sports carried out a comprehensive tennis court site survey and report.

Our detailed report which was presented to the tournament Director, was a vital tool that enabled the Director to focus his budget resources to areas of concern. Our report focused upon:

  • Surface slope
  • Depressions/ bird baths
  • Root heave to the perimeter edge — roots encroaching towards the playing area
  • Non Structural Surface Cracks
  • Tennis Nets and posts condition
  • Existing playing Surface — Delamination
  • Contamination
  • Perimeter Drainage
  • Previous Repairs
  • Fencing

All of the above was classified in order of priority and the budget was allocated according. The priorities were:

  • Root heave to the perimeter edge — roots encroaching towards the playing area
  • Cracks in the court surface
  • Resurfacing Works — Re-condition of existing playing surface

Prior to any resurfacing works being carried out, Mor Spots identified areas of heaving asphalt. Tree roots had encroached onto various court area(s) and had lifted and cracked the asphalt and existing tennis surface color coating. These sections were “cut out” and the tree roots and contaminated/damaged asphalt was removed. Fresh asphalt was relayed and allowed to cure before surfacing works began.

During the inspection, it was seen that visible cracks in the court surface had been repaired previously by others. The filler material had failed, and the cracks had re-opened. Although not structural cracks, these small surface fissures were unsightly and would require repairing with the correct material. Mor Sports used both a flexible crack filler and our proprietary court patch binder to successfully repair the cracks.

The project was then completed with the resurfacing of the court by the application of two layers of the Deco color system, the surface of the US Open since 1979.

The Decocolor system can be used with the cushion system, or as in this project as a “stand alone” system.

The installation process was as follows:

  1. We installed one layer of Acrylic Resurfacer to the entire court surface area.
  2. We then installed a minimum of two layers of Deco Textured Course. The colours chosen by the Client were US Open Blue for the inner areas and US Open Green for the outer areas. As demanded by the Tournament Director, the finshed color coating system matched both the colors of the US Open and the playing characteristics.
  3. Finally, we painted in the playing lines with white textured line paint.

After resurfacing, the tennis net posts and a tennis nets were installed and the courts were handed over to the Client after a full and final inspection.

The tournament was a huge success and the South Seas Island Resort is now rightly recognized as one of the outstanding tennis venues on the island of Sanibel and Captiva. By using the skills and knowledge of the Mor Sports Group, the Tournament Director ensured that facilities became the premier training facilities on the island of Captiva for both junior and professional players as well as programming for adults of all levels.
